Ceramics UK Calls for Clarity on Energy Relief for Industry
Ceramics UK is continuing to call for further detail on the Government’s British Industry Competitiveness Scheme (BICS), with the majority of its members currently ineligible for support with energy costs.
From 1st October 2026, businesses can apply for a reduction in electricity costs of up to £40 per megawatt hour from 2027, backdated to 2026. However, as with the British Industry Supercharger scheme, most ceramics manufacturers do not qualify.
Ceramics UK Chief Executive Rob Flello said:
“A small number of ceramics manufacturers do qualify for BICS, but we still need more detail about the decision-making process to understand the reasoning behind other parts of the sector being ineligible.
“Currently, producers of concrete or stone bricks and tiles are eligible for the scheme, while manufacturers of clay bricks and tiles are not, and this will impact competition in the market.
“We also feel strongly that refractories should qualify for BICS, and there is a lack of transparency around why this is not the case.
“Applications for the funding close on 30 November, so it is urgent that we get clarity for our members.”
In May, the Government announced a £120 million Ceramics Industry Support Scheme (CISS) to support energy efficiency, decarbonisation and the long-term competitiveness of UK ceramics.
Rob added:
“We were delighted that the Government committed to a Ceramics Industry Support Scheme, recognising the vital role the sector plays in the economy.
“However, while the CISS package is designed to support investments in changes that will help secure a longer-term future for the industry, companies need broader and ongoing support with energy costs to help level the playing field with overseas producers.
“The processes deciding which sectors and companies receive support are inaccurate, and we call on Government to work more closely with us on these issues.”
Ceramics UK will continue to engage with Government on behalf of the sector and press for greater clarity on eligibility and access to energy support.
