Ceramics UK Cautiously Welcomes Landfill Tax Decision, But Finds Autumn Statement Lacking Critical Support for Housing and Energy
Ceramics UK offers a cautious welcome to the Government's decision regarding the Landfill Tax, but overall finds the Autumn Statement disappointing and lacking in any stand-out measures to support the UK ceramics industry.
We are pleased that the Government has listened to our representations and those of wider industry about proposals to reform the Landfill Tax and has made the decision not to remove the exemption for filling quarries with a disposal permit, which supports vital quarry restoration.
However, despite this welcome decision on Landfill Tax, the Statement offered little else for UK Ceramic manufacturers and specifically failed to address key industry concerns including:
Housing: There was nothing significant to get the housing market moving. The Statement contained no meaningful support for first-time buyers and, crucially, failed to address planning reform. As a result, there is no help for the UK’s clay brick and related industry to get the houses built that the UK desperately needs.
Energy: There was no mention on energy support, which is critical for our sector.
Business Rates: We are disappointed that measures to support the high street will mean the introduction of a higher business rates multiplier for factories with a rateable value (RV) of £500,000 or more.
Ceramics UK is currently still digesting the full details of the Statement and is working its way through other measures.
